How to Add or Remove Classic Fonts in Mac OS X

For adding fonts in Classic environment, first you must restart the Classic environment so that the fonts will be available to Classic applications. In case of removing font from Classic System Folder, you must first shut down the Classic environment.

How to Add a Font

For Mac OS X 10.0 - 10.2.8:

  • Stop the Classic environment
  • Add the font file(s) to the Mac OS 9 System Folder's Fonts folder. If you do not know which Mac OS 9 System Folder is used by Classic, check the Classic preference pane.
  • Start Classic or open a Classic application. The added font files should now be available there.

Mac OS X 10.3 or later:

  • Quit any active Classic applications or stop Classic using Classic preferences.
  • Open Font Book, which is in the Applications folder.
  • Click the triangle next to All Fonts.
  • Drag the fonts you're adding onto "Classic Mac OS".
  • Open the desired Classic application(s).

How to Remove a Font

For Mac OS X 10.0 - 10.2.8:

  • Stop the Classic environment.
  • Remove the font file(s) from the Fonts folder within the Mac OS 9 System Folder. If you do not know which Mac OS 9 System Folder is used by Classic, check the Classic preference pane.
  • Start Classic or open a Classic application. The removed font files should no longer be available.

Mac OS X 10.3 or later:

  • Open Font Book, which is in the Applications folder.
  • Click the triangle next to All Fonts.
  • Select "Classic Mac OS" in the Collection column.
  • Select the font to be removed in the Fonts column.
  • From the File menu, choose Remove Font.
  • Restart Classic using Classic preferences.

Note: Removing fonts with Font Book moves the font file into the Trash. Empty the Trash to delete the file.

How to Stop or Restart Classic Environment

  • Choose Apple menu > System Preferences.
  • Choose View > Classic.
  • Click the Stop or Restart button, as the case may be.
